Walker initially started off as a model to Lord Frederick Leighton, sitting for the artist on a number of occasions between 1858 and 1859, who encouraged him to become an artist. Walker's attended the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited there 1872 - 1918. He would go on to become a fashionable society portraitist of the period, receiving notable commissions from royalty as well as from fellow artists. An entire book by the writer Belinda Morse is dedicated to this artist - John Hanson Walker: The life and times of a Victorian artist (January 1, 1987). Many of his portraits are held by the National Trust, Derby Museum and Art Gallery and Victoria Art Gallery, Bath.
