Description

Stylish and attractive portrait of noble Gentleman, namely Count Vilhelm August Cronstedt (1804 – 1874, Fullerö, Upsala) – see below. Signed lower left and dated 1856 by Carl Wilhelm Nordgren (1804-1857), Swedish portrait painter and professional trumpeter, for the Life Guards of Horse.

Canvas app.34 x 27.2 cm (roughly 13.4 x 10.7 inches) and exceptional Empire gilt gesso frame of first 19c half is 47.5 x 38.6 cm or 18.7 x 15.2 inches. His father, Gustaf Daniel Nordgren, was a watchmaker. While still quite young, he took a job as a military trumpet player; largely because of his family's poverty, rather than musical aptitude. He drew and painted as a hobby, and his skills were noticed by Count Magnus Brahe who, in 1828, helped him enroll at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. There, he studied portrait painting with Fredric Westin. He participated in the Academy's exhibitions until 1856. On Royal commission, in 1831, he painted a view of Gripsholm Castle. In 1827, he married Johanna Amalia Rautell. Their son, Axel also became a well-known painter. According to his own accounting, he created over 600 original portraits and a large number of copies. He also did some landscapes, genre scenes and religious works, but they are much less familiar. His works may be seen at the Nationalmuseum, the Stockholm City Museum, Nordiska museet, Länsmuseet Gävleborg, and Skokloster Castle as well as the Musée Bernadotte in France.

Lieutenant at Jämtland's field hunter regiment 1827-04-25. Dismissal as lieutenant in the army 1832-01-27. Farewell from the military service 1835-03-21. Died 1874-02-27 on Fullerö. At the death of his older brother in 1842, he took over the fideicommission estates of Fullerö and Almö with subordinates in the parishes of Barkarö, Lundby, Dingtuna and Skerike, Västmanland County. Married 1845-08-08 on Öne å Frösön in Jämtland to diocesan maiden Anna Ulrika Matilda Rothlieb, born 1819-12-09 Eksebo, died 1885-07-21 on Fullerö, daughter of Major Axel Fredrik Rothlieb, and Christina Margareta Durée.

Married 1876-07-31 on Fullerö to the editor of the magazine Nya Dagligt Allehanda, jur. kand. Vilhelm Alexander Bergstrand in his 1st marriage (married 2nd 1882 with the former wife's cousin Ida Catharina Christina Grundal, born 1849-10-05, died 1913-03-07 in Södertälje, daughter of the captain of Västernorrland's conscription battalion Nils Emanuel Grundal and Carolina Christina Rothlieb), born 1850-09-26 in Västerås, died 1891-02-02 in Stockholm.
