19th Century Swedish Monochrome Watercolor King Welcome Scene Signed Frame ^Sale

This rare original historical monochrome watercolour (grisaille) of the late 19th century, attributed to the renowned Swedish illustrator Theodor Heurlin (1867–1953), constitutes a vivid eyewitness testimony of Scandinavian chronicle during the era of the Swedish-Norwegian Union. The master's own handwritten inscription at the lower edge of the sheet reveals the subject of the scene: the reception of King Oscar II by the Stockholm public at the Central Station upon his return from Norway. The composition is full of lively, almost reportage-like dynamism: a crowd of townsfolk, ladies in broad-brimmed hats and gentlemen in top hats, has surrounded the monarch's carriage on the square by the station and enthusiastically welcomes him. The mounted guard restrains the press of the jubilant people, while the monarch himself in the court carriage, greeting his subjects, stands and renders a military salute to those gathered. The artist's free, masterful and swift technique, built upon nuances of deep tones and transitions of light, conveys the genuine pulsating atmosphere of the unfolding event.
