19th Century Scottish Highland Cattle Loch Landscape Oil Painting Signed Huish ^Sale

This fine painting, executed in oil on canvas in the late 19th century by the unidentified Scottish or British artist F. Huish, is typical of an entire movement of British painting of the late Victorian period, in which such acclaimed masters as Louis Bosworth Hurt, Henry Robinson Hall, and Henry Garland worked. The foreground depicts a small herd of Highland cattle with mighty horns, driven by a herdsman and his dog to water at a small plateau with a pond, whose banks are covered with lush grass and fragrant heather. The overcast sky with drifting storm clouds in the background and the silhouettes of mountain peaks dissolving in a bluish-grey haze naturalistically reflect the atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands with its changeable character and harsh climate. This painting will make a fine acquisition for connoisseurs of animalier painting of the "Scottish" genre, which enjoyed great popularity among collectors of the Victorian era.
