19th Century Romantic Pastoral Alpine River Valley Landscape Oil Canvas Signed ^Sale

This picturesque pastoral landscape, painted in 1865 by the talented Scandinavian artist C.C. Simonsson, represents a classic example of European academic romanticism. The canvas opens before the viewer a majestic panorama of a river valley, warmed by the rays of the hot midday sun and encircled by a mountain range. A lone peasant woman walks along a winding road across an arched stone bridge. The spatial perspective smoothly draws our gaze further, to a castle with massive towers, a river bend with cattle grazing on its banks, a small town immersed in the greenery of gardens, while in the distance the landscape is crowned by a snow-capped mountain peak, enveloped in a bluish-grey haze. The artist employs deep tones, a rich colour palette and subtle nuances of light, which betrays the confident hand of a master well acquainted with the Italian landscape tradition.
