Type: Portrait
This magnificent portrait, created in France in the early 19th century, represents an outstanding example of historical Empire-era lithography. The portrait depicts Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, the famous Marshal of France during the time of Napoleon, who later became King of Sweden and Norway under the name Charles XIV Johan. The sheet was executed by the Parisian workshop of François-Séraphin Delpech (1778–1825), one of the leading publishers of portrait lithography of the Restoration era, after a drawing by the French Romantic painter Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse (1784–1844), a master of battle scenes and formal portraits, a pupil of François-André Vincent, and an exhibitor at the Salon since 1808. The artist masterfully succeeded in conveying not only ceremonial grandeur, but also the strong-willed, resolute character of the celebrated military commander, whose destiny is inextricably linked to the pivotal events of European history of that era. Housed in an exquisite mahogany frame with gilt bronze rosettes, this artwork carries within it the genuine aesthetic and spirit of its time. The portrait will become not merely an elegant accent to a classic interior, but a true treasure for discerning collectors who value impeccable artistic taste and historical heritage.
