This enchanting night landscape in oil on canvas was painted by an Unidentified, presumably German, master "P. JHNEN" or "P. IHNEN", in the late 19th century, and is imbued with a romantic mood inspired by the works of such renowned masters of this genre as Sebastian Pether or William Henry Crome, as well as by some influence of the Barbizon school. A motif simple at first glance, the bend of a quiet river, is revealed by the artist with a genuine poetic feeling. Masterfully employing a complex colour palette, he achieves an incredible sense of depth and atmosphere throughout the whole scene. The centre of the composition is the moon, whose radiant cold light, breaking through a veil of clouds, lays a shimmering path upon the mirror-like surface of the water, flooding everything around with its mystical glow, and dramatically contrasting with the deep tones of the surrounding nature. Small light accents, the glowing window of a hut and a bonfire on the opposite bank of the river, harmoniously complement the magic of this luminous phantasmagoria. This work, admirable in its beauty, will occupy one of the most important places in any interior and in any collection of fine art.
