Ivan Petrovich Vakurov (1885 - 1968). Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1935), People's Artist of the RSFSR (1956). Member of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR since 1934. Hereditary icon painter. In the years 1893-1899. studied in the workshop of N. M. Sofonov, where his father, P.V. Vakurov, was a foreman. He considered his teachers I. M. Bakanova and A. A. Dydykina (although he did not study directly with them). In the years 1899-1915. worked in the workshop of N. M. Safonov. Restored icons in the St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod and frescoes in the Spasomyrozhsky Monastery. In 1915, from the workshop of M.P. Parilov, he painted the church of the Holy Lake Monastery. At the end of his work, he moved to the workshop of A. D. Salautin, where he painted large-sized icons for the iconostasis of Tsaritsyno Cathedral. In the years 1919-1922. worked in the icon-painting workshop of Vashurov in Moscow. Tried to paint wooden utensils. In 1923 he arrived in Moscow and entered the workshop of Vashurov. Then he moved to the workshop of A. A. Glazunov, where he began to paint papier-mâché items. In 1924 he returned to Palekh, where he continued to work alone. At the Paris exhibition in 1925, his works received gold and bronze medals and an honorary diploma. In December 1925 he entered the Artel of Ancient Painting. In 1934, he was one of the initiators of the reorganization of the vocational school to the Palekh art school, where he taught since 1955. One of the founders of the art of Palekh lacquer miniatures. Developing the icon-painting tradition, he introduced many fundamentally new miniatures. He worked in monumental painting (the chess room of the Palace of Pioneers in Ivanovo, 1938, the pavilion of the central regions of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition, 1939), painted porcelain, was engaged in theatrical and decorative art (decoration of the play “The Snow Maiden” of the Moscow Art Theater, 1936), book design (“Song of the Petrel” A M. Gorky, 1936, “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel” by A. S. Pushkin, 1937), with porcelain painting, created drawings for fabrics (1920-1930). Subjects of works: folklore, literature, history, battles, triples, genre scenes, hunting, Soviet. He participated in exhibitions since 1923.
