This charming oil on paper was painted by renowned British maritime artist Sarah Louisa Kilpack (1839-1909) in 1882, capturing a romantic twilight scene on the rocky shores of Southsea, the celebrated Victorian resort town of Portsmouth on England's southern coast. The composition depicts two elegantly dressed young ladies seated upon coastal rocks, gently watching a young man gathering oysters for them in the tidal pools at evening low tide. The artist rendered an extraordinarily beautiful sunset in lavender hues that envelops the seascape in a dreamlike atmosphere. Her exceptional attention to light, color nuances, and the finest details demonstrates the mastery of an artist at the height of her creative powers. From the pencil inscription on the painting, we can deduce that this work was created by S.L. Kilpack in 1882 for her friends, the Hutchins family, during their shared holiday at the Southsea resort. This painting will undoubtedly become a treasured jewel in any collection and grace any interior with the romantic lilac mood of a seaside sunset.
